More than ever, images account for most downloaded bytes on a web page, and often occupy a significant amount of visual space. Creator Studio re-sizes images to deliver them quickly, and optimizes them for the device displaying the Experience.
Creator Studio's Image Optimization Strategy focuses on these 2 elements:
- Byte savings and performance improvements - the fewer bytes the browser must download, the less competition there is for the reader's bandwidth, and the faster the browser can download and render the Creator Studio Experience.
- Light-weight image loading - this helps Experiences load faster, and avoids the use of heavy images on mobile devices.
Our Approach
Creator Studio supports the upload of high resolution images and can scale them down so that they are optimized for all devices. Note: the size of images you are using will have an impact on how much they can be scaled down/optimized by Creator Studio. Check out this article for best practices on how to format your images prior to uploading them into the platform.
The way Creator Studio handles image optimization can be summarized as follows:
- You upload an image, which is stored to our Amazon S3 infrastructure.
- Once uploaded, Creator Studio uses AWS Lambda to scale down images to fit some predefined box sizes, representing specific dimensional categories the images would fit in. If the sent image already fits the box size (meaning, its dimensions are smaller than the given size) it will not be scaled. Aspect ratio is kept.
- We operate under the assumption that you will want to maintain as many pixels in your imagery as possible. For example, if you were to upload an image sized at 5 MB containing 5000 pixels, our optimization will probably scale that down to about 2.5 MB to keep the majority of what you have given us.
- Essentially, we want to optimize your files as best as we possibly can without overriding the intentional design of your imagery

- Device and container size will determine the best scaled image, and the selected image will be served in your Experience.
- The optimized images are served over our CDN (Akamai) to minimize response and transfer times to consumers.
Our support team is able to adjust, or outright disable, our optimization if needed. Contact support@getfastr.com if you would like to discuss doing that for your Creator Studio account.
